Uvac Canyon: A Guide to the Meanders, Griffon Vultures and Best Viewpoints

If you’re planning a nature getaway in southwestern Serbia, Uvac Canyon deserves a spot at the top of your list. Tucked between the Zlatar and Javor mountains, this stretch of the Uvac River hides one of the country’s most striking landscapes, blue-green river bends winding through limestone cliffs, with rare birds of prey circling high above. Whether you’re coming for a day trip or staying longer at accommodation nearby, here’s what you need to know before you go.

What is the Uvac Special Nature Reserve

The area around the Uvac River has been under state protection since 1971, with its boundaries expanded over the following decades to cover the entire valley ecosystem. Today the reserve spans several thousand hectares between the Zlatar and Javor mountains, across the municipalities of Nova Varoš and Sjenica. Its centerpiece is the river’s canyon valley, famous for its incised meanders tight, looping bends carved over millions of years as water cut through the limestone bedrock, now the visual trademark of the whole region.

Three dams built along the river created a chain of three lakes: Zlatarsko (Kokin Brod), Uvačko (also known as Sjeničko), and Radoinjsko. It’s this flooding of the valley that produced the postcard image most visitors associate with the area, sweeping river curves framed by tall cliffs.

The griffon vulture – the true ruler of the canyon

The main reason this area was placed under protection in the first place is the griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus), an imposing bird of prey with a wingspan of up to three meters. By the mid-20th century the species was on the brink of extinction in Serbia, with only around twenty birds remaining. Thanks to decades of habitat protection, the colony at Uvac has grown to several hundred breeding pairs, making it one of the largest in Europe, second only to the colony in Spain.

Griffon vultures feed exclusively on carrion, which makes them a kind of natural “recycler” that helps prevent the spread of disease. The best time to watch them circling above the canyon is early morning, when thermal air currents first start rising from the valley. Beyond the vultures, the reserve is home to over a hundred bird species, along with numerous fish, amphibians, and mammals.

Viewpoints and boat cruises through the meanders

For the best view of the meanders, head up to one of the lookout points above the canyon – the panorama is hard to put into words, and photographers especially favor early morning light, when mist still lingers over the water.

For a different perspective, you can board a boat or catamaran that cruises through the meanders. The standard tour takes about four hours and covers roughly thirty kilometers of waterway, with a stop at the Ice Cave, which is partly equipped for visitors. Along the way, guides usually share stories about the area’s history and the vultures nesting on the cliffs above.

Practical tips for your visit

• When to go: summer (June–September) offers the most pleasant weather for cruising, hiking and birdwatching. Late spring and early autumn are beautiful but noticeably cooler, the Sjenica area is known for its cold climate, so even summer mornings can be crisp.
• What to bring: sturdy footwear for uneven terrain, binoculars if you have them, and a warm layer whatever the season, temperatures here can drop sharply, especially in the mornings and evenings.
• Getting to the lake: from Sjenica, follow the road toward Ivanjica; from the other side, the lake is reached via Nova Varoš.
• Respect the reserve: this is home to rare and endangered species, stick to marked trails and keep noise down near nesting sites.
